Working in the period houses of W4
Chiswick is largely Victorian and Edwardian terraces on long side roads off the High Road, and a good many of them were converted into two flats, one up and one down, decades ago. The original details tend to survive: a tessellated path up to the door and deep skirtings, often with stripped boards in the front rooms. A soaking mop dulls a waxed board in one go. In those rooms the cleaner works with a well wrung cloth and takes the extra few minutes.
Then there is the water. Thames Water supplies W4 at about 300 parts per million, which is hard, and the scale shows on glass shower screens within weeks and turns Victorian floor tiles cloudy. On a tenancy clean descaling takes a real share of the bathroom time, and the bathroom is usually the first room an inventory clerk photographs.
Parking is a patchwork. Around Chiswick Station the controls apply Monday to Friday between 10am and noon only; Chiswick Mall is controlled from 9am to 5pm; Mid-Chiswick has had Sunday restrictions added. Name the road at booking and the signs get read before anyone loads the van.
Regular housework fills the rest of the week, much of it in whole houses. The red brick of Bedford Park and the bigger places south of the A4 in Grove Park usually need four hours a visit, sometimes five. The extended family terraces over by Acton Green are much the same.
